Sabine Taevernier

Before developing her art consultancy and management activities, Sabine Taevernier worked for 5 years as an independent curator specialized in Belgian art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She has, in this respect, organized collaborative exhibitions with the museums of Ghent, Antwerp, Milano, Frankfurt and Rotterdam, dedicated to Symbolism, Expressionism and especially James Ensor. It is in this context that she was hired by Christie’s in 1988 in order to handle the Belgian sales in the period between 1988 and 1990. Based in Brussels, she stayed with Christie’s for 10 years as an expert in the Impressionist and Modern and the Contemporary department. She acquired expertise through her responsibilities in connection with the Goldschmidt auction (Modern art, Belgian-French), the liquidation of the Galerie Brachot (Surrealism and Contemporary art), the Peeters auction (Broodthaers and Pop Art) and multiple individual sales of works.

She established her independent activity in 1998 and resumed her curatorial activities by organizing an exhibition on Cobra and collaborating with exhibitions dedicated to James Ensor. As a specialist in the artist, she created in 2002 the Ensor Advisory Committee.  Since 2005 she is affiliated as an expert to the Belgian Chamber of Art experts. In May 2019 she was apointed vicepresident of the Cultural Heritage Counsel of Flanders, Belgium (Topstukkenraad).

Educated in both French and Dutch, she completed her studies as a graduate in History of Art from the University of Leuven (KUL) in 1980. She has acquired knowledge of English as well as international experience as an expert travelling between Belgium, London and New York.
