When one of my clients decided to sell a major work by Pierre Alechinsky, I found myself, as always, facing the dilemma between a private sale and a public auction. The quality of the work on the one hand, and its rarity on the other, led me to opt for a public sale, as I believed the result would exceed the current market value.
Given the importance of the piece, I was not the only one interested, and others were trying to convince the owner to sell privately. I stood firm, and with an estimate of €350,000 to €450,000, Mur d’Oiseaux, 1958 achieved the artist’s world auction record, selling for €1,387,500.
